The bill easily passed the threshold of two-thirds support needed for constitutional modifications with 454 members in favor and only two opposed.
The passage of the Nari Shakti Adhiniyam, also known as the Women’s Reservation Bill, in the Lower House of Parliament, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was a “golden moment of India’s parliamentary journey.”
He thanked the House members who supported the law in his speech to the Lok Sabha.
“Yesterday was a pivotal day in India’s parliamentary history, and every member of this House and every political party leader played a role in it. I appreciate your support for this Bill, everyone,” Modi remarked. (modi)
The Prime Minister said, “And to finish this holy work, the way the members of parliament have supported the Bill, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
On Wednesday, the Lok Sabha wrote history when it unanimously approved the Bill allocating 33% of seats in national and state legislatures to women.
With only two members opposed and 454 in favor,
